Every time I take time off from running I use it as a chance to rediscover San Francisco. Between visiting my old favorites and exploring new venues, there is never a shortage of places to explore.
Below is a list of some of some of my favorites:
Bullshead (West Portal) - Best burgers in the city. Freshly ground right there. I get the buffalo burger, medium rare, with avocado, no bun and veggies on the side. It's always juicy and cooked to perfection.
Bursa (West Portal) - Delicious Mediterranean food! The starter platter is a meal in itself and we start every dinner with it. My mom and I also love the falafel salad. The falafels are stuffed with goat cheese and there is a guacamole garnish...what's not to love. The owner has been in the neighborhood for years and he is such a great guy! He even offered to donate food for my Welcome Home Party & Imagining Non-Profit Kickoff Event this Saturday. Yay for kindness!
Gracias Madre (Mission) - Vegan & Mexican. Hold your judgement. This place is amazing! My dad is a diehard meat eater and he raves about this place. The atmosphere is lively, often with a local mariachi passing through. The food is flavorful and plate licking good. We always start with the guac & tortillas, as well as the empanadas, for the table. For the main course, I share the tacos. It's a ton of food.
Ike's Place (Mission/Castro & 10 other Bay Area Locations) - Ike (soon to run for President?!?!) is a local celebrity and it's easy to see why. I had the pleasure of meeting him a couple weeks ago and our short meeting turned into a 3 hour chat about life, training, food, you name it. He almost convinced me to start Martial Arts and I left with the soon to be named Shannon Rowbury Sandwich. Look for it in stores soon. The proposed sandwich will feature the following: Teriyaki Salmon Burger with Wasabi, Provolone & lettuce/tomato on a Mariposa Bakery Gluten Free bun! Try it out and tell me what you think. We're still fine tuning, so suggestions are welcome!
Plow (Potrero Hill) - This is my favorite brunch spot in SF. The breakfast potatoes are sinfully delious and are probably my favorite part of the meal. My typical order is either the soft scrambled eggs (featuring fresh local produce) or the almond flour (gluten free) pancakes with fresh maple syrup. Yum yum. Insider tip: Since there is usually a wait for this teensy tiny place, ask for your cup of coffee while you wait.
Samovar Tea Lounge (Mission/Castro; Yerba Buena; Zen Valley) - Whatever your mood, Samovar has the tea for you. Owner Jesse Jacobs is a very cool guy and he shares his knowledge is such a inviting way. Plus, there are plenty of delicious and nutritious things to nosh on. My go to when I can't decide is the Moorish Service, but last time I had the Japanese Service (Salmon teriyaki with brown rice) and it was delicious! Coming soon: Look for an Athlete Pack of 3 teas (designed by me) to help support your training and promote improved athletic performance.
Taste and tell me what you think. Suggestions are always welcome! :)
